Everything you need to understand and master StepFarmer.
The basics
StepFarmer is an idle farming game for Garmin watches. Your real daily steps drive everything: they push your current crop toward harvest, which pays coins, which you spend on better crops and upgrades. Reset a field via prestige to bank a premium currency and buy permanent boosts.
You don't have to choose one field — every unlocked field earns from your steps at the same time. The watch just shows one at a time; switch via the "Go To" menu.
Steps & offline
Steps count even when the app is closed. StepFarmer banks the steps you take in the background and applies them the next time you open the app, using a daily reset at midnight to stay accurate.
Some upgrades boost "step power" — making each step worth more progress. Crucially, your prestige progress uses these boosted steps, so step-power upgrades also increase the premium currency you earn.
Coins & upgrades
Each field has its own coins. Spend them to unlock new crops (which yield far more) and to buy upgrades (more income, more step power, special bonuses). Upgrade costs scale exponentially, so there's always a next goal.
Prestige
Prestiging resets a field's coins, crops and upgrades in exchange for a premium currency (Stars, Seeds or Blossoms depending on the field) and a permanent prestige level. You spend that currency in the field's shop on prestige upgrades that persist forever and compound across runs.
Prestige is optional, but powerful: because the bonuses stack, a field you reset a few times will out-earn one you never have. The currency formula rewards longer runs (it grows with the square-root-ish power of your progress), so there's a sweet spot between resetting early and pushing far.
Wheat Field — specialise
The field you start with. It rewards specialisation: every harvest of a crop builds experience that boosts that crop's income. Nine crops from Wheat to Quinoa. Prestige currency: Stars.
Prestige upgrades: Income Boost (+yield), Step Power (+step value) and Bargain Hunter (cheaper crop unlocks).
Vegetable Garden — vary
Unlocks at 100 Wheat Field Stars. Where wheat rewards focus, the garden rewards variety:
- Variety bonus: +5% income for each different crop you've grown this run.
- Seasonal bonus: +25% when a crop is in its real-world season.
- Companion planting: growing certain crops in sequence gives bonuses.
- Crop rotation: a streak bonus for not repeating the same crop.
Prestige currency: Seeds. Upgrades: Growth Speed, Bountiful Harvest, Seasonal Master, Biodiversity.
Orchard — invest
Unlocks at 50 Vegetable Garden Seeds. The long-term field: fruit trees build maturity from the steps you spend on them, and that maturity survives prestige — trees keep 50% of it (up to 90% with the Deep Roots upgrade). So your orchard literally gets better the more you prestige.
- Pollination chain: switching between neighbouring trees builds a bonus.
- Seasonal harvests: +30% when a tree is in season.
Prestige currency: Blossoms. Upgrades: Deep Roots, Golden Harvest, Orchard Keeper, Tree Wisdom.
Barn — optimise (end-game)
Unlocks after reaching prestige level 5 in the Wheat Field, Vegetable Garden and Orchard. The Barn ties everything together:
- Raise animals — Chickens, Sheep, Cows, Pigs, Goats and Bees.
- Animals are fed with coins from your other fields. A well-fed animal earns full Gold, scaled by that field's prestige level (food quality). A hungry animal earns less.
- Animals level up the more they produce.
- Bees give a permanent bonus to every animal once bought.
Currency: Gold. The Barn has no prestige — instead its Gold feeds the meta-upgrades below.
Gold & meta-upgrades
Gold (earned in the Barn) is spent in the Meta-Shop on universal upgrades that boost every field at once:
- Golden Touch — +5% coins in all fields per level.
- Swift Steps — +3% step power in all fields per level.
- Star Power — +10% prestige currency in all fields per level.
- Master Farmer — −5% unlock costs in all fields per level.
A Stats screen (available from any field) tracks lifetime steps, lifetime Gold, total prestiges and your achievements.
Moving to a new watch
Your progress lives on the watch. When you simply update StepFarmer on the same watch, it carries over automatically. To move it to a different watch, use the backup code:
- On the old watch, open Garmin Connect → StepFarmer → settings and copy the Backup code.
- On the new watch, open the same settings, paste it into Restore code and save.
- Open StepFarmer on the new watch — it confirms with "Progress restored!".
The code is a complete snapshot of your save (prestige levels, currencies, upgrades, Gold, achievements and more) and nothing leaves your device — you just copy and paste it. A code made on an older version still restores into a newer one.
